Every quarter, a supply-chain team inside a defense prime sorts its connector and machining sources into two piles: suppliers they can defend to their own customer, and everyone else. The data sheets in both piles look nearly identical. The difference is never the catalog. It is what the supplier can prove.
Hermetic connectors sharpen that difference more than almost any other component. A hermetic seal is a latent, non-inspectable feature — once the connector is potted into a sensor package or torqued to a pressurized bulkhead, no incoming inspection can verify it. So a prime cannot buy the part on faith and check it later. It has to qualify the supplier before the fact. Here is what that evaluation actually weighs, and where most shops fall out of the running.
1. A quality system that runs the shop — not one that hangs on the wall
AS9100D certification is the entry fee, not the differentiator. Every supplier in the pile has the certificate. What a prime's supplier quality engineer looks for is evidence the system is lived: first-article inspection packages built to AS9102 that match the drawing revision on the traveler, nonconformance records that show real dispositions rather than a suspiciously clean log, corrective actions that actually closed. An experienced SQE can tell within an hour of a site visit whether the quality manual runs the shop or decorates it.
The tell is usually the NCR log. A shop that reports zero non-conformances in a year is not perfect — it is either not looking or not writing them down. Primes trust suppliers who catch their own escapes and can show the paper trail of what changed afterward.
2. QPL listing you can verify without taking anyone's word
"We build to MIL-DTL-38999" and "our part number is QPL-listed under MIL-DTL-38999" are different statements. The first describes intent. The second is a standing, third-party-verified qualification — a specific part number, from a specific manufacturer, on the government's Qualified Products List, maintained under audit and revocable.
For a prime, QPL listing moves verification off their desk. They do not have to audit your sealing furnace or your helium leak-test bench to trust the seal; the qualification program already did, and keeps doing so. That is why programs write QPL requirements into the drawing — and why a supplier without listing is often out of the running before the RFQ is even scored. If your program allows non-QPL hermetics, expect the burden of proof to land on you instead: stated leak rate, 100 percent helium testing with a calibrated mass spectrometer, retained traces by lot.
3. Traceability that survives an audit you didn't schedule
When a field issue surfaces three years after delivery, the prime needs to know — within about a day — which material heat, which seal lot, and which inspection records sit behind every serial number shipped. That is the standard a defense supplier is actually held to.
In practice it means: raw material certified and traceable to the heat number on the bar; a job traveler that carries operation stamps from saw cut through final inspection; seal-operation and plating records tied to the lot; and dimensional reports retained with the shipment. A shop that has to reconstruct lot history from memory and loose certs will not survive the first program audit — and primes know it, so they test for it during qualification, not after award.
4. An export-compliance posture that protects the program
Most hermetic connector applications in defense sit under ITAR. Registration is the baseline; what evaluators probe is the posture around it. Who inside the shop can access controlled technical data? Are drawings quarantined from offshore subcontractors and foreign-person access? Does purchasing flow down DFARS specialty-metals requirements to the mill? One mishandled controlled drawing can pull a prime into a disclosure it did not cause — so compliance maturity is scored as program risk, not paperwork.
5. Lead times that survive contact with the schedule
Primes track supplier on-time delivery to the line item, and the scorecard follows you. What they have learned to distrust is the optimistic quote. A supplier who says fourteen weeks and hits it protects the program schedule; a supplier who says eight and delivers in sixteen costs expediting fees, line stoppages, and the planner's trust — in an environment where government fiscal-year deadlines do not move.
Capacity honesty shows up in small ways during evaluation: whether the quote acknowledges current backlog, whether long-lead materials like controlled-expansion alloys are flagged up front, whether the shop commits to a recovery plan when something slips instead of going quiet.
6. Depth of people, not just machines
The evaluation question no one prepares for: "What happens when your seal-line lead retires?" Machines are fungible; the knowledge to run a glass-to-metal seal operation, hold a first-article to AS9102, or set up a five-axis job on an exotic alloy is not. Primes look for documented setups, cross-trained operators, and a bench that is being rebuilt — apprentices running real work under supervision, not a workforce aging out with its knowledge undocumented. A supplier one resignation away from losing a critical process is a supplier one resignation away from being resourced.
What to do with this list
If you are a buyer qualifying a hermetic connector source, compress the list into evidence requests: the current QPL listing for the exact part number; a recent AS9102 first-article package; the NCR and corrective-action log; lot-traceability records back to material heat; ITAR registration and data-handling procedure; and twelve months of on-time delivery performance. A supplier who hands all of that over without flinching has been through this before. A supplier who stalls on any one of them is telling you where the risk lives.
And if you are a shop trying to get into the first pile: none of this is built in the quarter you need it. It is built in the years before the RFQ arrives.
